Philosophy of Education“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” William Arthur Ward
The sole purpose of formal education is rooted in fostering the skills and inspiration necessary for those who will become active participants in the world. Art education is a legitimate component to the education of all individuals. Our society is becoming a part of a global community. Being creative in the ways of communication is a skill that will be necessary for our future and experiences in the arts help foster this skill. Experiencing the arts requires that students engage in higher levels of thinking. The arts require students to utilize skills such as creative problem solving, and decision-making. The arts also require students to actively investigate, analyze and evaluate new concepts along with new materials. Art education provides experiences and knowledge that are not found in other areas of education. It is important for us to recognize art education as its own discipline, however, it is also important to recognize that these experiences and knowledge can be connected to virtually all disciplines; it is through this that students who experience the arts learn that cultivating and creating these connections improves their development in all aspects. As an educator it is my goal to lead students to the necessary knowledge and the skills required to make these connections. Art is not solely about the skills required for successful drawings, paintings or sculptures, but rather, art is about self-expression. A work of art is an artist’s response to the world around them, and is a response with their own personal analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the world as they see it. As an art educator it is my goal and responsibility to facilitate these responses as well as the process of creating them and fostering them into a work of art. As an educator it is my goal to not only explain and demonstrate the processes to foster connections but to inspire responses to the world through the use of these processes. |
